In my day, I would drive my teachers crazy by making them feel old by calling them "sir" or "ma'am." I suppose being very formal with teachers is standard in Germany.

Again, no big deal for me.
I was formal with all adults, other than my parents. "Yes, sir." "No, Sir."
I'm still formal on some occasions with certain people.
About a month ago, I called my sister-in-law "ma'am." The minute the word was out of my mouth, I was like, "Why'd I do that? She's family." Harry got a laugh out of it, though.
I call my doctor "Ma'am"

I call my doctor "Mama"^^
